Vehicle Maintenance For Fall

Motorists take note. Components on your vehicle weakened by this summers driving conditions could completely fail during colder temperatures of this winter. This could turn into a costly breakdown. Here is some advice to help you prepare for the change in the weather. Some of the tips will require a professional technician, others you may be able to do yourself.

The basics - Read your owner's manual to become familiar with your vehicle. Follow the recommended service schedules.

Housekeeping - Washing and waxing your vehicle will protect the finish. Inspect lights and bulbs. If your wiper blades seem worn, replace them now before it rains. A blanket, jumper cables, a high-energy snack, and water are all good things to keep in your trunk in case of an emergency. A cell phone is also a good idea.

Battery - A weak battery can only be detected with professional equipment. You can handle routine care by scraping away corrosion from the posts and cable connections. Clean all surfaces and re-tighten connections. Be sure to wear protective eyewear and gloves when working with your battery.

Engine Oil - Be sure to change your oil and filter as specified in your owner's manual.

Cooling System - Flush and refill as recommended. The level, condition and concentration of the anti-freeze should be checked periodically. Be sure to let the engine cool before removing the radiator cap. The tightness and condition of the drive belts, clamps, and hoses should be checked by a professional.

Engine Performance - Problems with rough idling, hard starts, stalling or diminished power should be corrected before colder weather arrives. Describe any changes in your vehicle's performance to your technician.

Heater/Defroster - For your comfort and safety, the heater and defroster should be in good working order.

Tires - Rotate your tires every 5,000 miles. Check your air pressure monthly, after the tires have cooled down. Examine them for nicks, cuts and uneven wearing. Check your spare tire too.

Brakes - Brakes should be inspected as noted in your owner?s manual or sooner if you notice pulsation, grabbing, noises or longer stopping distances.

Finding a Good Auto Service - Ask friends and associates for recommendations. Contact your local consumer organization regarding reputation, complaints, etc. Look for facilities that employ technicians certified by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) ASE technicians have taken and passed national competency exams. Good shops will be orderly with modern equipment, customer service awards and an attentive staff.
