Did you notice? Gas prices are on the rise again. Here are a few tips you can follow to make your car more fuel-efficient and lessen the amount of money you spend at the pump.
- The most important tip is to make sure you give your vehicle a regular tune-up. Keeping your vehicle in top condition means it will run more efficiently and get more miles to the gallon. There is no hard and fast rule as to how often you should get a tune-up. Speak to your car care professional about your specific needs. Different shops may vary in what is done during each service, so be sure to keep a record of all services performed on your vehicle. Keep a small notebook in your glove compartment to write down dates and what was checked or replaced. If you always frequent the same shop, they will get to know your vehicle and your driving habits. That will make it easier to keep things on track for service.
- Check your tires to make sure that they are properly inflated. Low tire pressure means your car has to work harder to move along and that takes more gas. Tires lose pressure at different rates, so look at all your tires on a regular basis. Be sure not to over-inflate the tires and make sure that they are in good condition. Have your wheels aligned regularly too.
- The fuel filter needs to be changed at least once a year. The filter can become plugged with debris. This will slow the process of getting gas to the engine or can even stop the car if the filter becomes completely blocked and no gas can get through. Your car care professional will be able to tell you when it’s time for a new filter.
- Did you know that most air conditioning systems require more fuel to keep them going? If possible, keep your windows open and the air conditioning off.
- Consider modifying your driving habits. It may seem like the world is speeding past us, but driving at a slower, constant speed will help to conserve fuel. Try to reduce heavy acceleration and hard braking.
- The best way to save money on gas is to not use your car as much. Think about carpooling, biking or walking instead of just automatically jumping in the car for every trip. The exercise will make you feel better too.
Higher gas prices may be here to stay, but you will save yourself money if you will pay attention to your vehicle and your driving habits.
