We all know that we have a spare tire in our truck and we also know how important it is that we do, but it is also very easy to ignore that tire until we get a flat. We need to know how to care for that spare before the emergency arises. Today, our spare tires are often small, thin temporary tires that will fit in a very small compartment. These tires include, folding spares that are inflated with an air canister prior to mounting, compact spares that are smaller and narrower than the other wheels on the vehicle, and lightweight spares that are the same diameter as the other tires on the vehicle, but thinner. All these spares are intended for emergency use only. They should be used to get you to the gas station or your favorite repair shop but not for any long time use or high speed driving. It is important that you realized that the temporary spare that came with your vehicle is designed to fit your vehicle only. Never use your temporary spare on another vehicle. No more than one temporary spare tire should be place on any vehicle at any time. Any restrictions on your temporary spare should be outlined in your owner’s manual. Most manufacturers advise against traveling over 50 miles per hour or further than 50 miles. Failure to follow the manufacturer’s advice may increase your odds of being involved in an accident. Temporary spares can make handling your vehicle more difficult. Temporary spares are not built to full size tire specifications so most manufacturers advise against towing a trailer, using snow chains, or even taking your car through an automatic car wash with the temporary spare. The best solution for a flat tire is a properly maintained spare. Under inflated tires will perform poorly. The only type of spare tire that can be used without all of the above restrictions is a conventional full-size spare that is the same as all the other tires on your vehicle. |
