Automotive theft is on the rise according to the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB). Just locking your doors in not enough to keep your car protected today. To prevent theft, experts suggest that you use layers of anti-theft devices for the protection of you and your vehicle. The number of layers you need will depend on your vehicle and your geographic location. The NICB suggests four categories of anti-theft protection. · Common Sense Always remove the keys from the ignition, lock your doors and close your windows. Hide your valuables and always try to park in a well-lit area. · Warning Device Installing items such as audible alarms, steering-column collars, and brake locks can help deter auto thieves · Immobilizing Device Some electronic devices rely on computer chips in ignition keys. Other devices inhibit the flow of electricity or fuel to the engine until a hidden switch or button is activated. Ignition keys, fuse cutoffs, kill switches and starter, ignition and fuel disablers are also popular. · Tracking Device Tracking systems, such as LoJack, emit a signal to a police or monitoring station when the vehicle is reported stolen. Tracking devices are very effective in helping authorities recover stolen vehicles. |
