Getting A Handle On Car Clutter

Trash on your seats, on the floor, in the trunk? No matter where the trash or clutter is located in your vehicle, it can distract and annoy you. During a fender bender, a piece of clutter can turn into a projectile and may obstruct your vision or even worse.

Now that people are spending more time in their vehicles, and maybe even using the car as a mobile office, accessories take up a lot of space in your vehicle. Here are some tips to help you take care of this problem.

Before you run out to your favorite store for car organizers, take a few minutes to determine what you will be organizing in your vehicle. Some of the common categories to consider are paper (ATM and gas receipts, coupons, shopping lists and receipts, and even reading material. Other items might include CD’s or DVD’s, clothing, kid’s toys, school supplies, maps, sports gear, and errand items such as library books, rented videos and dry cleaning.

Now that you know what you need to store neatly inside your vehicle, it is time to select the best container for the job. Beware of cute devices that catch your eye but are not necessarily all that useful in the long run. You need containers to contain but also be easy and quick to get into. Different items are available for the different storage areas of your car such as glove compartment, seats, visor, doors, dashboard, floor and trunk. Most containers have specific uses such as CD holders, and visor sunglasses holder. A plastic collapsible crate for your trunk is great and it will take up very little space when you are not using it. Clear plastic storage containers with hinged or removable lids can help corral bulky items such as sporting gear and toys. These can be easily found at most discount stores.

If your vehicle is doubling as your office, it would be wise to choose containers designed for office supplies and papers. Plastic file boxes with lids will ensure quick stops will not cause your papers to fly about the interior or trunk.

An easy to reach trash receptacle in the front and back of your vehicle will help prevent your vehicle from filling up with debris. The type you choose will depend on the trash you create. If you rapidly collect food related trash, a container that seals will help contain the odor. If papers and trash pile up quickly, an open bin between the seats or on the floor may be ideal. Both types of container are reasonably priced. In a pinch, even a paper or plastic grocery bag will do.

No matter how fantastic your new containers are, they will need to be emptied regularly. It will be easy to establish a routine, such as every night when you get home or each time you pull into the station for gas, that is time to empty the trash containers.

Make it a habit to weekly remove things that do not belong in your car. This will help keep clutter under control in your vehicle.
