Vehicle Maintenance Before Leaving For Vacation

During the summer, many families pack up and hit the road for long distance vacations. Before you head for Florida or other points east, make sure that you include your family vehicle in your preparation. Some simple preventative steps can help you to not only drive smart but save you time, money, and even the headache of having your trip interrupted or maybe even cut short because of a vehicle breakdown. You should be able to relax and enjoy the trip and not have to worry if your car will make it home in one piece.

Hot weather is very hard on cars. It can speed up a car's wear and tear since fluids and lubricants break down more quickly. By following the manufacturer's recommended maintenance schedule (see your owners manual) and taking the following precautions, your vehicle will be ready for a long, hot summer.

  • Consider a pre-trip inspection by a qualified shop before you leave. Repairs made on the road are usually much more costly and can deplete your vacation budget and spoil your plans.
  • Check the air conditioning. Inspect your belts and hoses. It might be wise to have a professional check the entire system.
  • Check the radiator pressure cap. Flush and refill the cooling system according to the manufacturer's service intervals and specifications.
  • Check the engine light. Never leave on a long trip with your car's "check engine light" or "malfunction indicator light" lit up. This light alerts you to a malfunction if it lights up while you are driving your car. Have it checked out as soon as possible.
  • Change the engine oil and filter according to your owner's manual. Also check the coolant, brake, automatic transmission, windshield wiper and power steering fluids. Replace ragged wiper blades. Change all filters as recommended. A dirty air filter lowers gas mileage and reduces engine performance.
  • Inspect your battery and battery cables for corrosion, cracks and dirt. Hot weather can shorten the life of your battery. It is always safer to have it tested before you leave for your trip, especially if it is near the end of its warranty. It is much easier and much more cost effective to replace a dying battery before the trip that to replace a dead one on the side of the road.
  • Check the air pressure in all the tires, including the spare, to make sure they are properly inflated. Uneven or excessive tread wear are signs that it may be time for rotation or even replacement. Check your brake pads and linings for wear.
  • Test your car's interior and exterior lights, including turn signals and high beams to make sure they are working properly. This is also a good time to clean the lenses to get maximum visibility.
  • Following the above tips will allow you and your family to enjoy your trip.
